With moving house being such a stressful and monumental occasion, it is important to have some organisation and some semblance of a routine when it comes to getting everything ready for the big day. Packing and preparing to move house may seem like a chore but it needn’t be if you follow these top tips. Whether you are moving house yourself or utilising a man in a van, these tips may be exactly what you need.

Get Rid Of What You Don’t Need

It can be tempting to take everything with you, but if you haven’t used something in ages and it is unlikely you will use it again, get rid. There is no point in packing away stuff you don’t need and making the effort to transport it to your new house, only for it to sit there doing nothing. Make the job of moving so much simpler by removing them before you even get to that point.

Make an effort to take these items to the tip or the charity shop before your moving date so you don’t have to factor in getting rid of these items on the same day.

Take Extra Care

When it comes to breakable stuff, make sure you are packing these with care. They require a bit more care and attention than your other possessions so you need to make sure these are well cushioned for the moving process. Also make sure you don’t overpack and make the boxes too heavy as this won’t be good.

When packing boxes, make sure to fill any space left over with tissue paper, newspaper or bubble wrap to keep your items secure and to stop them from moving around in the box whilst they are being transported to your new home.

Make A List - Or Two

Lists are vital when it comes to preparing to move house. You’ll want a list of what is in each box and what room they go in - stick it on the box once sealed, and that will make it easier to work out what goes where when you’re finally moved in. It is also important to make a list of bills and services that you need to change the address for, as you don’t want to be paying a mail redirection indefinitely.

It cannot be stressed enough the importance of labelling properly too - make sure it is clear for everyone to see what boxes go where and have an inventory list too to make sure you are fully prepared. You may even want to create a schedule to keep to too with things you need to do.

Pack A Room At A Time

Starting with the least used rooms, pack a room at a time as it is easier to work this way and move onto the next room once one is finished - otherwise you end up with half a job done in multiple places. Start early, packing up stuff long before moving day so you don’t have to rush closer to the time.

Get Everyone Involved

Don’t let all the legwork fall down to you when it comes to packing. Make sure everyone takes some responsibility for their own room with you overseeing the process. Moving house can be a long and arduous process if people aren’t pulling their weight.

Get Someone To Move It For You

A man with a van is perfect for this so get one booked in early to ensure you get the time and date you want. Once your boxes are packed, you can sit back and relax until you’re all moved into your new house as they will do the loading, moving and unloading for you - with just the packing and unpacking left for you.

This is a perfect option if you struggle to get time off of work or are making quite a big move. It eases some of the stress on you and you can be secure in the knowledge that your possessions are safe in the hands of professionals.

Don’t Leave It Until The Last Minute

Plenty of people make the mistake of leaving packing until the last minute and then having to rush around. Even if you are using a man with a van who does half the job for you, you will want to make sure everything is ready to go on the day. You can start packing as soon as you get a confirmed date or maybe even before if you have things you can pack that you don’t need right now. Start with the least used rooms and items first, such as the garage, the shed or a spare bedroom and make sure you leave items you use every day to be packed last.

Keep Some Stuff With You

After a long day of moving, the last thing you are going to want to do is unpack everything to find certain things you absolutely cannot be without. If you know you need specific items for the first night, pack them in a large bag or holdall and take that with you, separate from your moving boxes, so things are close by if you do end up needing them. Some people pack drinks, food and general hygiene items to save having to go through boxes later that night.

With these tips and tricks, packing and preparing to move house should be a breeze and less stressful than you anticipated. Good luck!
